Unleashing Your Inner Adventurer: Thrilling Activities on the Outer Banks

27 July 2023 |  Published By: Hotels OBX

While vacationing on the Outer Banks, why not try your hand at some thrilling adventures? These suggestions are near either of our beautiful OBX hotels on the beach. Good news too! You don’t have to be the bravest of people for all these activities either. However, we are certain that you are sure to have fun with whatever you choose.

Skydive OBX

For the not-so-faint at heart, go flying!! Well, skydiving, that is. Skydive OBX is located at the airport in Manteo on Roanoke Island. Once briefed, you will take a 9,000-foot climb in a Cessna 182. Just imagine your view of The Outer Banks from that far up. Once at the determined spot, you will tandemly jump with a certified instructor. You will freefall for about 30 seconds before your parachute opens, and you float to the ground. There is even a spectator’s area for those, like me, who are not nearly as brave as you need to be to do this. They can take photos for you to see later. Skydive OBX also has a photo add-on package so that you can have the memory forever. In the end, you will receive a certificate of achievement for taking your first skydiving flight. Keep a lookout while you’re up there for your OBX hotel on the beach!

Parasailing on the Sound

Would you enjoy floating through the air but rather be grounded? Parasailing is the option for you!   At Kitty Hawk Watersports, you can fly while still being attached to a boat. You will travel by boat to the sound, where you can choose from 3 different flight levels. These levels range from “I’m in the air” to “Wow, look how far away everyone is.”  Reservations are required; up to three people can fly simultaneously for this 10–12-minute flying experience. Kitty Hawk Watersports has a go-pro add-on option so you can share with everyone the view and perspective you had while in the air, with everyone. You may see parasailers from your Outer Banks hotel oceanfront balcony.

OBX Ghost Tours

Is something spooky more your thing? Try a walking ghost tour. In my humble opinion, the best by far is OBX Ghost Tours. The tour guides are not only knowledgeable, but they also add life and enthusiasm to the tour. Each 1.25-hour walking tour will take you around Downtown Historic Manteo. You will be guided past historic buildings, past the lighthouse, and along the water.  The guides will tell you stories about the haunted hauntings of Manteo, NC. This tour is not too spooky for kids, either.   Your younger family members will enjoy the tour too. They will even get to keep an eye on the real ghost detector that will surely point out any paranormal activity. Will you be brave enough to venture over to the historic cemetery after your tour to look for your ghosts?

You Can’t Help but Smile on a Jet Ski

If watersports are up your alley, there are abundant jet ski rentals. For jet skis, Causeway Watersports in Nags Head offers the option for a thrilling solo ride or a tour. If you want to feel the wind in your hair and go fast, you can book a solo ride in 30-minute increments. The cool thing with Causeway Watersports is that they also offer jet ski tours. These tours are just over an hour long and will take you through up to 45 miles of fun. In addition to the fun and fantastic views, on tour, you will also have the opportunity to get up close and personal with marine life ranging from sea turtles to fish to dolphins.  You will also be able to tour the marshland on Roanoke Island.

Alligator River Kayak Tour

What if the kids want fun and the parents want educational activities? Then go on the Alligator River Kayak Tour. Wait, fun and educational? Yep, sure is. Kitty Hawk Kites produces this 2-hour tour, one of the most affordable at less than $60 per adult. You will be educated on one of the most famous “moonshine capitals” of the Prohibition area and learn about our area’s deep-rooted history in logging at Buffalo City. Along this tour, you will also be in the middle of the beauty of nature. Wildlife such as turtles, sea otters, fish, birds, bears, owls, and even the occasional alligator can be seen on the tour. The guides are knowledgeable and more than willing to answer any questions you may have.

Dolphin Cruise

Last but not least, a not to miss activity when visiting The Outer Banks is taking a dolphin cruise. The sunset dolphin cruises are the best. Ranked in the top 5 on Trip Advisor is Capt. Johnny’s Outer Banks Dolphin Tours. Their Guaranteed Dolphin Watch Tour is a 2-hour cruise that leaves in the morning, the afternoon, and then right at sunset. Capt. Johnny’s is open from May through October, and you will learn all about the bottlenose dolphin and the local area.   Although they are only open Monday through Friday, this one is a must-do experience.  The seating is in such a way that everyone on the boat has a great spot. There is even a restroom on the boat. So, reserve your spot if you want to take a nice ride along the sound and spot many dolphins in action. This tour, especially the sunset ride, fills up very quickly.
