The Nitty-Gritty on Fishing License

Because laws can be updated at any time, please refer to the NC Wildlife Resources Commission for the most up-to-date rules and regulations on fishing licenses. As of 2023, to go fishing in the Outer Banks, a fishing license may not be required for charter boat & pier fishing, because they are sometimes covered by a blanket license. For example, Avalon Pier pays for a blanket license each year so individuals don’t have to. Jennette’s Pier also has a blanket license and is located just less than half a mile from the Comfort Inn South oceanfront in Nags Head, North Carolina. Otherwise, a Coastal Recreational Fishing License IS required to fish. The types of fishing that can be done in the Outer Banks are Brackish, Fly Fishing, Sound and Head Boat Fishing, Surf Fishing, Pier Fishing, and Inshore & Off Shore Charters on the Outer Banks. There are two (2) types of fishing licenses you can obtain: 10-day and annual on a state versus non-state basis, and they are sold to those aged 16 years and older. For more information and the most up-to-date cost, visit The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. If you stay at the Comfort Inn South Oceanfront, you can easily purchase a fishing license from Jennette’s Pier with a valid driver's license. 10-Day Coastal Recreational Fishing LicenseAnnual Coastal Recreational Fishing License State Residents; 16 years and older - $5 State Residents; 16 years and older - $15Non-State Residents; 16 years and older - $10 Non-State Residents; 16 years and older - $30
